What are Essential oils?
Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile liquids that are distilled from plants. These oils can come from the seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers or fruit of a plant. Essential oils provide plants with protection against disease and play a role in plant pollination. The aroma is not the only benefit of essential oils; we are just beginning to understand the therapeutic benefit of essential oils for holistic health care.
How do I use Essential oils?
Essential oils offer a wide range of physical and emotional benefits. They can be used as a single oil or as a blend of oils in three main application techniques:
1) Aromatic- this can be as simple as adding a drop of essential oil into your palm and inhaling a few times or by diffusing them.
2) Topical- Essential oils can be applied safely to the skin; some essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied directly to the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin.
3) Internal- essential oils can be used internally to support various health conditions. The best way to take essential oils internally is to add your essential oil to a vegetable capsule and swallow whole. * Only use pure therapeutic grade essential oils for internal use.
What is a pure therapeutic grade essential oil?
This means that that the essential oils are 100% pure, potent and have been distilled to preserve therapeutic benefit of the plants oils. Essential oils embody the regenerating, protective and immune-strengthening properties of plants. (Source: www.aromatools.com) This means that the essential oil can offer these benefits to your body, however the chemical constituents are important to determine the purity and therapeutic value of an oil. The chemical constituents are influenced by where the plant is grown, the soil, temperature, climate, harvest season and method and distillation process. The same species of plant when grown in a different environment will vary in chemical composition; this is the potency of the plant itself. The vast majority of essential oils are produced for their aromatic qualities only, this means they are distilled at high temperatures and pressure with chemical solvents used in the process. So most essential oils on the high street may smell good and cost much less but they will lack the chemical constituents necessary for the oil to have therapeutic benefits. Purity is another aspect of the equation as many essential oils contain fillers or other elements, which dilute and alter the purity.
How do pure therapeutic grade essential oils work?
Essential oils chemical structure is small and lipid soluble, this makes them easily and quickly absorbed into the body. The lipid solubility of essential oils allow them to cross the phospholipid cell membrane and gain access to our cell. Essential oils are beneficial for therapeutic use as they have the potential to affect every cell in the body within 20 minutes and then be metabolised like any other nutrient.
